..::Book Review::.. Wait for the Rain by Maria Murnane

Overview

"Daphne White is staring down the barrel of forty—and is distraught at what she sees. Her ex-husband is getting remarried, her teenage daughter hardly needs her anymore, and the career she once dreamed about has somehow slipped from her grasp. She’s almost lost sight of the spirited and optimistic young woman she used to be.

As she heads off to a Caribbean island to mark the new decade with her best friends from college, Daphne’s in anything but the mood to celebrate. But when she meets Clay Hanson, a much younger man, she ignores her inner voice warning her that she’s too old for a fling. In fact, this tropical getaway might be the perfect opportunity to picture her future in a new sun-drenched light.
With the help of her friends, Daphne rediscovers her enthusiasm for life, as well as her love for herself—and realizes that her best years are still ahead."

My Personal Review

I love reading books.  What I like the most is escaping my world of stress, and entering a fictitious world in which I can explore and discover new things (both about the story line and myself!).

What attracted me towards this book is that (first, it's one of my favorite genres!), and secondly, the main character, Daphne, is a woman who is feeling a little bit down.  I think a lot of us can relate to the feelings presented in this novel.

The main character, Daphne just turned 40.  She's divorced, has one child that is growing up (Emma), and she's never finished her career.  Her ex-husband is getting remarried, and I think that's hit her hard because life is changing before her eyes, and there's nothing she can do to change it.  Emma's growing up, and relying less and less on her everyday.  I think Daphne is feeling very alone, and at times, even really isolated.  Her life began a little differently.  She entered into a marriage that is more traditional than not, and she had to put her dreams, goals, and ambitions on the back burner while putting the needs and wants of her family unit first.

Now that this is gone, Daphne needs to feel needed again, and she gets in touch with her old friends from college.  From the outside in, Daphne thinks these other two women lead the perfect lives.  Careers. Beauty.  Confidence.  However, there is a lot more to their stories, and it's interesting to follow along.

I loved reading about the vacation. I enjoyed the laughs, the tears, and the lights of hope that shone through the darkness.

Then Daphne meets Clay. This is my favorite part, and I was rooting for them the whole time.  Clay represents all of the missing pieces of Daphne's life, but she struggles with the age difference.  He brought exploration, adventure, and spontaneity to her life.

I loved this book, and I highly recommend it!  It's wonderful to see a woman grow right before my eyes, to see her shed the past and flourish into a new life without settling.

I can wait to read more from Maria Murnane!
