My Review of the October 2014 Flicker Box

What is it exactly?

     From the website. . .
"Flicker Box is a monthly subscription service for candle lovers! Our foundation was inspired by a love and appreciation for handmade candles. We believe that people appreciate products produced by quality artisans made in the United States. We want to connect candle lovers with people who love to make candles."

Review…

Flicker Box recently sent me their newest October subscription box.  This box included the following:  Orange cinnamon votive, orange leaf floater, mulled cider wooden wick tin, autumn leaves jar candle, promo codes, a description card, a book of matches, and a special Halloween treat bag with candy.

The Flicker Box is a little on the pricier side-- with a monthly subscription price of $34.00 (Your first month is discounted to $25.00).  They do offer other options, too.  You can prepay for 3, 6, or 12 months or you can even prepay for 12 months / bi-monthly.  Shipping is always included, and you can cancel at anytime.

Packaging & Presentation

The Flicker Box is pretty neat looking.  It is a natural looking, fold-top box stamped with 'Flicker Box' on the front.  Each box is tied decoratively with a string. The box is 9.5" l x 6.5" w x 4" h.

The inside of this box looked pretty fancy.  I was curious as to how Flicker Box packed their candles so they do not break.  After I opened it up, I saw pretty much everything was nested inside brown crinkle shreds. It was packed nicely, nothing seemed broken or thrown about at first look.  The description card was seated directly on top of everything.

My Personal Experience with Flicker Box

I love, love, love candles.  I probably have an addiction small obsession.  I collect them, I burn them, I buy them as souvenirs when I go somewhere...  needless to say, I have a lot of candles.

When I found out about the Flicker Box, I just had to have it.  I'm pretty familiar with the large candle companies, but Flicker Box introduces you to artisanal candles that are not sold in big box stores.  What's better than finding the 'perfect' candle?  Flicker Box assists you on your journey to do so.  My first box is the Leaf Peeping box, which is awesome because I love the autumn fragrances.  I unpacked all of the components, and here is what it looks like:

The first product candle that I was drawn to was the little orange votive in a glass holder.  This candle is made by Armadilla Wax Works, a company that handcrafts candles in Prescott, Arizona.  I pulled it out of its holder, and it has a rough feel to it.  This votive will burn for 15 hours.  The fragrance is remarkable, and the throw is strong-- you can smell it all around the house and it's just a tiny votive.  The scent is orange cinnamon, and it is described as, "Our Orange Cinnamon scented candles combine both the freshness of a ripe orange with the exotic, yet familiar, fragrance of spicy cinnamon."  This candle is also gorgeous when burning in a dimly lit room. You can check out the entire line of the orange cinnamon candles here.

The next product is also crafted by Armadilla Wax Works.  It is a floating candle.  It is an unscented, orange colored, maple leaf.  The reason I like candles is for their fragrance, so I usually do not buy unscented candles no matter what they look like. This is my first experience using a floating candle.  This candle was actually pretty cool!  I loved the way it floated around in the water and created some different shadows on the wall due to its movement.  This candle burns for 7 hours, and makes a great addition to a center piece (especially for Thanksgiving!).  To my surprise, they are also inexpensive.  You can check out the floating maple leaf candles here.

The third product that I sampled is a tin candle from a company called 2nd Star on the Right.  They are located in Chicago, and makes their candles from a renewable source-- 100% soybean oil.  This candle comes in a reusable tin, complete with a tight-fitting lid.  The fragrance is mulled cider, one of my favorite scents.  I also love the wooden wick, it adds to the experience of using the candle.  It creates crackling sounds and lets the flame dance a little wilder.  I received an 8 oz tin, and it is supposed to burn for 40 hours. This candle is also an attention-grabber while burning.  It is simply gorgeous.  I like everything about this candle, except that there is not a company label on the candle.  If you give it to somebody for a gift, they will not know where to reorder.  You can view the entire collection here.

The last candle is from Midnight Owl Candle Company.  I received an 8 ounce jar of Autumn Leaves.  This company is situated in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.  They make clean burning candles that never contain any phosphates, toxins, or lead.  Each candle is highly scented, and hand poured.  Midnight Owl Candle Company describes this fragrance as, "Autumn leaves fragrance is a mix of carameled apples, pumpkins, pie spices in an envelope of turning leaves."  I love the look of the jar, too!  When I think of a fragrance called 'Autumn Leaves', I think of something outdoorsy and masculine.  This version is very sweet, feminine, and food-like.  It burns evenly, and lasts a good amount of time.  You can check out their other fragrances here.

Lastly, I also wanted to make note of the included description card.  It really gives some good background information on the artisan companies that are featured, as well as some direct insight of the candles themselves.  It is a handy card to keep around so you can purchase more candles at a later date.

Pros of Flicker Box
  • I love getting candles shipped to my door.
  • Flicker Box takes the hassle out of finding artisinal candles.
  • I was introduced to a floating candle, something I'd never thought I'd be interested in.
  • Each candle was made with stunning quality.  There were not any 'filler' box items.

Cons of Flicker Box
  • Sometimes a subscriber does not like certain scents.  It would be pretty neat if Flicker Box allowed you to create a profile highlighting some of your fragrance likes and dislikes.
  • I'm really not sure about the price.  I can see around $20-$25 being a reasonable price per month for this service, but $34.00 seems high.  I'm not really sure if I feel I'm getting my money's worth with this box.
Summary

I really like Flicker Box and what they were founded upon.  This month I was introduced to three brands of candles that I never knew existed.  They are different than the big box candles, but they also have a personal story behind each label.  I see myself ordering from these companies in the future.  Flicker Box really puts thought into their boxes, and you can tell that the company legitimately cares about presentation and the products they are sending.
