My Review of Ecosak

What is it exactly?

     From the website. . .
"Ecosak is a premium food-grade nylon nut milk bag with a
draw string that is designed to produce the creamiest
nut milks.  It is also a versatile multipurpose kitchen tool also used for straining, soaking, and sprouting, cheese and yogurt making."

Review…

I was sent an Ecosak nut milk bag from Ecosak to review.
This bag is $10.95 on Amazon.  Shipping?  Free with orders over $35.

Packaging & Presentation of Ecosak

Ecosak arrived in a pretty simple package.  A Ziploc bag contained both the

Ecosak itself, and the brand paper.  There were no instructions on how to use it.

My Personal Experience with Ecosak

I love non-dairy nut milks!  I've been drinking almond milk for some time now, so when I had the opportunity to review the Ecosak, I was pretty stoked. Ecosak makes it super easy to make almond milk at home! This was my first shot at making almond milk.

Ingredients

The first thing you have to do is soak your almonds in water.  I used about a cup of raw almonds.  Some people do it overnight, some do it for an hour.  I chose somewhere in the 3-4 hour time frame.  After you are done soaking your almonds, drain and rinse them, and then put them in your blender!

Next, you add about 3 cups of water.  I have a Berkey Water Filter, so I used that water.  Then you add your 'extras' to make your milk extra tasty!  I used homemade vanilla extract that my friend Emily made for me, cinnamon, Truvia, and some pink salt.  You can choose any ingredients that you want.

Add water and your other ingredients

Now for the fun part-- super blending.  You are going to want to kick that baby into high gear!  Blend everything together until you feel that it is the consistency of milk.  I blended mine on turbo using the pulse method for about 1.5 minutes.  The first picture is before I blended, the second picture is the final product.

Now here is where the Ecosak takes over.  If you look at the picture above, you can see that there is a bunch of solids mixed in with the milk.  You don't want those.  At this point, you take a big bowl and pour your mixture into the Ecosak.

Pouring

Most of the milk will drain itself, but you are definitely going to have to squeeze some out of the remaining pulp.

Squeezing the Ecosak

...and here is the finished product!  You can put it in any jar or container you want.  I used mason jars because it is what I had at hand.  It was very easy to make, and it tastes incredible!

All done!

Pros of Ecosak
  • You do not have to mess with cheese cloth.  Thank goodness, because that stuff is horrible.  It falls apart and you have to replace it every time you want to make a new batch.
  • It's easy to store. It's a mesh bag.
  •  BPA free.
  • Excellent price for the time and headaches you will save if you used other methods.
Cons of Ecosak
  • Washing it.  It took me quite a long time to get the small almond pulp pieces out.
  • Warmer water makes it stiff.  Since there were no instructions, I didn't know that I should only rinse it under colder water.  What once began as a soft Ecosak is now a stiff Ecosak (that still works).
Summary

This is a really great product.  One that I am going to recommend. If you buy almond milk at the store, it is around $3.00-$3.50 per half gallon.  I bought one full pound of raw almonds from Publix for $3.81, and that is enough to make 3 batches of homemade, fresh almond milk.  Keep in mind that you can make other nut milks, too.  When you buy the Ecosak, the company gives you a free e-book that has a bunch of other recipes in it.  The only thing that I would like to reiterate is that when you rinse it after making your milk, do not use warm/hot water.
