..::Product Review::.. SquareHue Nail Polish Subscription

My Review of the July SquareHue Nail Collection

What is it exactly?

From the website . . .
"...Exclusive, premium polish delivered to your door.  Surprise yourself with beautifully curated colors.  Get fresh, limited edition colors with a date stamp..."

Review…

SquareHue recently sent me the July Passport Collection 'Barcelona 7/14' for review.  SquareHue provides a subscription nail polish delivery service.  The perks of becoming a member include:  never having to go to the store to get outdated nail polish (it comes right to your door!), keeping up with the latest seasonal colors, and not having to make the choice between the same few colors again.

The SquareHue subscription is really affordable at $14.99 per month, with a no-hassle commitment.  If you don't like it, you can cancel.  It's that easy.  At only $5.00 per bottle, SquareHue makes their nail collections cost-effective for even the amateur collector.

Let's face it.  I love nail polish.  This is my current collection (I even built the shelf!):

My nail polish collection

I thought I had enough shades that I couldn't add anything more or it would be a subtle repeat.  I was wrong.  SquareHue introduced me to a few shades that I have not used before.  Please read on . . .

Packaging & Presentation

The SquareHue box arrives in a little white box, approximately 5" x 3".  It is sealed well, and there is no interior box, only what you see.  Upon opening, the SquareHue logo is printed on top, and the nail polish collection is snugly seated in a shaped cutout bed surrounded by crinkle paper confetti.  There was also a little card sitting on top, but more about that next. Here is how it looked when I first opened it:

First look at the July SquareHue Box

The little card is actually pretty helpful.  It tells you not only the name of the current month's collection, but the name and type of each individual polish.

Contents of July's SquareHue Box

Three different colored nail polishes than I already had?  I didn't think it was possible!  Looking at the included card I was able to identify each polish:

  • Color #1:  Passeig de Gracia
    • Type:  Shimmer
      • My notes:  A dark purple, with hints of plum.  Shiny and deep.
  • Color #2:  Rambla de Raval
    • Type:  Micro Shimmer
      • My notes:  An uplifting orange, bright citrus.  Happy and charming.
  • Color #3:  Placa Catalunya
    • Type:  Shimmer
      • My notes:  A sexy pink, shimmery, unlike any other in my collection.

Here are some pictures of what they look like on.  Trying the colors vice looking at them in a bottle are two completely different things!  For the purpose of this review, I wanted to try each color, and show everybody how it looks.  Here they are...

The first color that I decided to try was the Passeig de Gracia.  This is definitely my style, and I was excited to see what it looked like:

Passeig de Gracia - Top View
Passeig de Gracia - Side View

In the end, I liked the Passeig de Gracia.  It is dark, it matches my skin tone, and I was very happy with the results.

The next color that I tried was the Rambla de Raval.  I wasn't so sure about this one, I have never sported an orange polish before!  Here is the result:

Rambla de Raval- Top View
Rambla de Raval- Side View

I wasn't too keen on the Rambla de Raval, however my husband loved, loved, loved it on me!  It was a little too bright for something that I'd wear everyday.  Nonetheless, it was a beautiful color, just not one that I would go out of my way to purchase alone.

Lastly, we have the Placa Catalunya.  A beautiful, shimmery pink.  I was looking forward to this one:

Placa Catalunya

Although I am more of a fan of the dark shades, I must admit that this was my favorite one of the entire collection!  It is beautiful.  I have received many compliments on it.  I have quite a few shades of pink in my personal stash, but not one quite like this.  The way the sun hits it and makes it shine when I go outside is wonderful.

Pros of the SquareHue Subscription
  • Quality, quality, quality.  I have nail polishes that (even with 3 coats!) look so thin and cheap.  I put one coat of each on, and it looked straight from the salon.  I was extremely impressed with that aspect!
  • Bottle design.  I love the square shape.  It is different, it is branding, and it is perfect for a shelf.  Unlike the round bottoms, these bottles won't tip over during a color search.
  • The service itself.  I really, really like that I can get these delivered.  I especially like that I don't have to pick out the colors.  It saves time and frustration.
  • Price.  I don't like to buy cheap nail polish.  I buy name brands, and I can spend around (on average) $8.00 per bottle.  At this price, I get beautiful, quality nail polish for less than I typically spend per bottle.
  • Durability.  Since I have had the polish on, I have not chipped, peeled, or cracked it.  It is just as nice as when I applied it.

Cons
  • You may get a color that you don't like, yet you are still paying for it.  Solution? Perhaps SquareHue can create a system where you can create a color pallet that allows you to choose color schemes that fit your profile.
  • I'm going to have to say price can also be a con if you do not typically spend on average of $5.00 per polish.  Solution?  Perhaps SquareHue can create a 'singles' store where a customer can purchase a single bottle for a slightly elevated price.

Summary

I thoroughly enjoyed the July SquareHue box.  I was looking forward to it, and it didn't let me down.  For a nail polish fanatic like myself, I was impressed with the quality, durability, and selection that SquareHue provided.

I love everything about this particular subscription service, and I highly recommend it if you are looking to experiment with a bunch of new color styles.  It's so worth it!
